The foreign rate is worth less than it reads: Citibank charges 2.99% on every foreign-currency transaction, which is more than the 1.8% the miles are worth. European currencies earn half the foreign rate, and government services, utilities, telecoms, education, insurance, real estate, transit and transport in dirhams earn 40% of the dirham rate. Utility bills paid through Citibank's own app, website or phone line earn nothing at all — the same bill paid at the provider earns the reduced rate. Flown against airline, hotel and travel-agent spending the miles are worth 25 to the dirham rather than 45. Requires AED 30,000 a month.
